Michael received his B.S. in mathematics and in computer science from the University of Central Florida in 2006, and his Ph.D. in bioinformatics from the University of Michigan in 2011. He was subsequently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley and joined the faculty of the Departments of Biology and Statistics and the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences at Pennsylvania State University in January 2014, and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Biology in 2019. In August 2019 he joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University. He was named an Alfred P. Sloan fellow in 2017, and he was awarded a National Institutes of Health Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (MIRA) for Early Stage Investigators in 2018. In 2020 he was appointed as an Associate Editor for IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. He is currently Associate Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
