Scan for positive selection in high-altitude Ethiopian populations using the population branch statistic. The peak under the gene BHLHE41 (aliases DEC2 and SHARP1) identifies it as our top genome-wide candidate. This gene is an excellent target for adaptation to living at high altitude as it is heavily involved in the hypoxia pathway. The top and bottom horizontal dotted lines represent 0.05% and 0.10% empirical cutoffs, respectively. Names in the shaded gray area are of the population(s) considered (Amhara-Tgray, Oromo, and Amhara-Tygray-Oromo). Figure modified from Huerta-Sánchez*, DeGiorgio*, and Pagani* et al. (2013).
